The importance of being scalable

One of the wonderful things about digitally native businesses is that they have an understanding that their business needs to be scalable. Indeed, it’s why we are reading more about innovative start ups that are trumping bricks-and-mortar businesses and acquiring business left, right and centre.

But that doesn’t mean more established companies can’t keep up, or need to do much to ride the wave of technological innovation.

Think of it as an on-demand service. You can obtain more computing power at the click of a few buttons, meaning that if you need more storage or server space, you can do so immediately and better respond to your customers’ demands.

Additional server capacity

Imagine your server as the engine of a well-oiled car. The engine that houses all of your applications, software, programmes and the associated infrastructure. Just as a slow engine performance would slow down your car, the same can apply to a poorly-configured server.

Scalability allows this server to handle larger volumes of network traffic and increased workloads, but spread across multiple digital servers as opposed to within the confines of one or two physical ones. Virtualisation is a key component, ensuring that your servers can support your scalability efforts. With physical servers, you could end up stacking multiple applications and roles onto the same server, which in turn increases the risk of damaging it. These unrelated applications could affect each other’s performance as well. By separating the different applications out onto different server spaces, you can better manage the workload of each server.

Software not compatible

One common problem companies encounter is that they find that new software isn’t compatible with old systems, or vice versa. In order for scalability to truly benefit your business, you need to understand how interconnected your infrastructure is, and can be. Being locked into a particular vendor’s products or services can be a barrier towards achieving successful scalability, resulting in you being unable to leverage the latest software and technology for your business. A decent IT team will be able to provide a log of all inventory, documentation and its limitations, which would form the basis of an in-depth understanding of your software landscape.

Achieving an IT infrastructure that is scalable isn’t about buying a brand new product and turning it on. It takes a number of different processes, people and decisions to create a scalable service that meets, and can exceed, your expectations and demands. No two scalable solutions are the same, just as no two businesses and their IT histories are.
